WELCOME TO LONDON!

If you're looking for the best in skilled admin roles, look no further! Gordon Yates is first name in London for secretaries, PAs, receptionists, and admin support.

Good luck with your planning – and here are some handy tips for everything else you need to think about.

Accommodation

Some useful sites for accommodation:
www.loot.com
www.tntgrapevine.com
www.londonlodging.co.uk
www.gumtree.com

When you first arrive, there are lots of hostels.  These offer safe, clean accommodation and are ideal for the shorter term.

There is a list of the top ten hostels on the Visit London website at www.visitlondon.co.uk - accommodation can cost as little as £20 for two nights.

Once you are established however, renting a shared house or flat is the best way forward.  It’s more sociable as well as being a more cost-effective option.  A single room costs around £60- 80 a week, a double room closer to £100. Utility bills (heating, lighting) will be added to this, and sometimes other household expenses.

Accommodation in the centre of London can be very expensive.

Most Londoners live outside the centre, where rents are much cheaper but it is still easy to get around by tube, national rail and bus. (See “Getting Around London” below)

Some typical areas where travellers tend to live:
      Wimbledon/Southfields          Clapham Willesden          Hammersmith
Leyton/Stratford

Useful Tips to get around London

Buy a pocket A-Z or a full size one if you have a big bag!

Carry a tube map with you at all times (free from any tube station)

London buses and tubes work on a zone system. The centre of London is Zone 1. Zone 2 surrounds the central zone. Zone 3 surrounds zone 2 and so on. Ticket pricing is based on how many different zones you need to cross.

Visit the Transport for London website – www.tfl.gov.uk

A wide range of tickets is available, whether for single journeys, returns or (more typically) to cover travel for a month, or three months, or twelve months.

Check out London’s Oyster Card system – it provides an easy way to pay for bus, tube and even some rail travel. Quick and secure – you can buy or top up your weekly/monthly ticket on line. It also offers discounts to London attractions. Check these out at: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/microsites/oysteroffers/

For tube travel, always allow extra time for your journey – as a guide, each station takes about 3 minutes but always budget an extra 5 minutes per journey and allow time for delays. These happen on a regular basis but the tube is still the quickest way to get around.

If you’re feeling affluent, you can travel by taxi. London’s black cabs are every bit as iconic as London’s red buses, and are licensed to ensure their safety and the driver’s knowledge of London.

Check out all the details, including advice about the dangers of using unlicensed mini-cabs, at www.touruk.co.uk/london_transport/transport_taxi.htm

London companies embrace the whole spectrum of business sectors and styles. From the formality of the financial sector to the jeans and t-shirts of the design world, every look and lifestyle is catered for!

To maximise your opportunities, make sure you are prepared for the more formal corporate environment favoured by many London companies.

For women: full trouser or skirt suit with shoes (not boots)

For men: full suit with shirt and tie (not boots, not trainers)

Gordon Yates, like all good London agencies, will advise you about dress code before each individual booking.

Hi, Lucy Wilson here! I joined Gordon Yates as a trainee temps consultant in September 2006, so I’m one of the new guys still (we have a very settled team here, average tenure is over 7 years).

GY is a great company to work for. Being independent means that we can listen to our customers rather than a far-flung head office. A lot of our temps end up as friends – we like that!

Good luck, we look forward to seeing you soon!

We offer you:

·          Great jobs with top companies (Gordon Yates is the longest established name in London for skilled office staff recruitment)

·          Skills training and support (we have state-of-the-art software to help you polish your MS Office and other skills)

·          Good rates of pay, holiday pay, sick pay – and friendly onsite advice about tax and National Insurance paperwork

·          Unique loyalty bonus - that boosts your earnings by a meaty 6.1%, for every 13 weeks out of 17 that you work for us

·          Regular social events – where you get to meet other temps and the Gordon Yates team, and the beer is free!

·          Quality assured (Gordon Yates is a long-established member of the REC and subscribes to its professional code – see www.rec.uk.com)

·          Quality assured (Gordon Yates has been recognised as an Investor in People since 1997 – more about this prestigious award at  www.investorsinpeople.co.uk)

Hi, I began at Gordon Yates almost eight years ago as a junior. Now I head up our brilliant temp team!

I’ve been here long enough to appreciate that the great jobs we’re working on and filling right now owe everything to the temps who worked for us in the past, who helped make our relationship with clients strong.

Every temp is an ambassador of Gordon Yates. Make sure the impression you make is a good one!

Sarah Mustafa, Associate Director

Sarah’s ten tips:

·          Be punctual every day of your temporary assignment. We recommend that you arrive 10 minutes early. Plan your route and always allow extra time for your journey.

·          Call us by 8.00am if you are unwell, unable to make the assignment because of an emergency or if you are running late.  We will liaise with our client on your behalf.

·          Be aware that working hours vary from job to job. Ensure that you organise personal appointments outside of working hours. Remember time is money with temping.

·          Keep in touch with us.  We will call you at least once a week during the assignment but please call us too.

·          Be committed. Take an interest in the company you are working for.  Research via the internet. Listen and take notes from our brief to you about the company, the job and the culture.

·          Take care in your appearance and dress appropriately for the assignment.  Company dress codes vary, we will let you know our client’s style but corporate dress is always the safest option.

·          Keep your mobile switched off during the day unless the client states otherwise. If you need to use email or landline for personal business check with your line manager first. Remember most companies have specific rules about email etiquette.

·          Make yourself aware of health and safety rules in the company and within your individual workplace.

·          Be flexible – this is what temping is all about.

Have a positive and upbeat attitude – temping is about personality as much as skills and experience. If you can, offer to take on extra duties. By being pro-active you will impress the client and are more likely to be asked back.

Hi, I’m Claire Harrop. I’ve been part of the team here for getting on for three years now – can’t wait to meet you!
