Rise of the £60K PA

Executive PA October/November 2009

Big money is on offer for PAs who know where they want to go, what they want – and are determined to be tops!

Surveys suggest that personal assistants in central London can earn £30,000 to £40,000, while pay for executive assistants regularly exceeds £45,000. Some even take home more than £60,000.

Candidates at this level need much more than the usual PA skills of IT, literacy, diary keeping and travel arranging. As well as dealing with confidential information they may be making decisions on the boss’s behalf and managing other administrators.

Richard Grace, joint MD of Gordon Yates, says: “A top PA needs to be an excellent, facilitator, fixer, organiser and networker – someone who can make things happen and ease their boss’s life. It’s less about hard skills and more about initiative, anticipation and a positive, proactive attitude. Employers are looking for a strong track record and a bedrock of experience.”

Top level jobs may include research, such as digging out information on new markets, taking charge of projects and compiling sophisticated presentations.

Competition for top jobs is stiff so candidates need a carefully honed CV which shows off their breadth of their skills. PAs at this level have invariably added to their traditional skill sets and so it may be worth considering what skills will complement working for top level executives and then investing in some training.

For a £60k salary, it may well be worth it!
